Rachel Alexandra has taken the racing world by storm with 8 wins at six different tracks in 2009. After demolishing her rivals in the Kentucky Oaks by 20 lengths, she boldly faced the boys in the running of Preakness Stakes. Not only did she defeat the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird but she won the race and became the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown over the boys. She went on to win the Haskell and again she left her male rivals in the dust. Following that, her dramatic victory in the historic Woodward Stakes against a field of older males delivered the knock out punch. The gutsy win helped her earn the title Horse of the Year for 2009 and has made her one of the most exclusive names in horse racing.

Secretariat captured my imagination at the age of 14 and continues to inspire me to this day.  In my generation everyone knew who Secretariat was even if they were not racing fans.  Throughout his brief but explosive career he was an overpowering personality and his impact on the sport of horse racing has been impressive.  Long after his untimely death in 1989, Secretariat remains the standard by which horses are judged. I treasure the articles in The Times, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and other publications that he graced, they bring back many warm memories of the horse everyone loved and admired.
