Guidelines for Commissioning A Horse Portrait Step 1 – Initial Consultation A. What subject would you like drawn? B. Would you prefer a head shot or full body portrait?
C. What setting would you like, a racetrack, paddock, or farm, etc...?
D. Do you want to include any people in the drawing?
E. What size pastel drawing would you like?
After addressing these questions, I might offer suggestions which might be helpful with fulfilling your expectations and maintaining my artistic standards.
Step II – Scheduling
I prefer to work from my own photographs and if that is possible, I will arrange a time to visit and photograph your horse. I also like spending enough time with a horse to get to know his or her personality. However, if visiting your horse is not practical, or if there is another reason that it is not possible, I can work from approved photographs accompanied with a written release from the photographer.
If I visit I will use the time to take notes and record details on color, confirmation, unique markings, and personality. I believe this interaction is important in developing a sense of my subject which helps me draw an accurate portrait. If a horse is in training, I will work closely with the trainer and try not to interrupt the trainer's routine. I will work myself into the horse's schedule verses working the horse into my schedule. Prices do not include travel expenses. However, since I prefer to visit my subjects in person and enjoy it so much, I only charge half of my travel expenses.
